Dr. James Lovelock (b. 1919), developed his Gaia hypothesis in the 1970’s. He posits that we are all part of one living, breathing organism.

In Greek Mythology, Gaia was the personification of the Earth, the Mother of everything beautiful in the world, held in the eternal light.

We consider ourselves the most intelligent and evolved of all earth's inhabitants. However, we are not just inhabitants of earth but part of earth; part of her infinite intelligence. Our attempts to tame her and regard ourselves above her are futile. We seek to separate ourselves, yet we remain profoundly interconnected. Her suffering is our suffering, whether we choose to see this or not.

Within us all, we have both masculine and feminine aspects. Throughout recorded history, masculine dominance has created tyrannical ruling systems, and now, an unsustainable existence. As a collective, we must seek to balance the masculine and the feminine. The feminine within each of us, must rise with her innate sensitivity and earthly wildness, to temper the strength of the masculine. Only then can we be whole and live with equanimity.

No longer can we justify ravishing the earth, each other and ourselves to satiate our greed and soothe our fears. Our inner children need to be comforted and reminded that they are safe as a part of the ever shifting, infinite whole.

If we cannot awaken to the suffering of our Mother, unite and act now, a reckoning will come. Insidious shadows continue to be cast far and wide; shadows that we would rather not see. Despite the pervasive dysfunction and darkness, the light is patient, unaffected and omnipresent. Our Mother will endure, with or without us.
