Lost in imagination, free, wild and safe, I emerged and blossomed in the dense, deep green, hillside garden nursery, planted by the four previous generations of family. Yet throughout my lifetime I have witnessed profound social and environmental upheaval, culminating in the declaration of a planet- wide climate emergency. We humans have always put ourselves at the centre of everything, a preconditioning that has enabled our gross abuse of the environment.
Through my contemporary still-life painting practice I attempt to de-objectify nature, highlighting the inherent vibrancy and beingness of these plant subjects. The botanical beings in my work express the empathy and care I have for our natural world while reflection our artificial separation we have from it. For me, acknowledging and healing our personal and collective wounds allows for examination of fear and greed. It is through this, and in sensing the vibrancy and inter-connectedness of everything that freedom is found.
